New scientific findings about pistachios

Research Center of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Faculty of Pharmacy of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, in a study has investigated the effects of intraperitoneal injection of hydroalcoholic extract of pistachio gum on muscle relaxation, sleep and anxiety in mice.

In this study, the effect of pistachio gum on motor balance and muscle relaxation was investigated by rotating rod and horizontal bar, 30 and 60 minutes after injection. In the hypnotic test, the time of onset of sleep and the duration of sleep were 30 minutes after injection of extracts and substances by induction of sleep by pentobarbital injection. Mice behaviors of mice were assessed by open box test and anti-anxiety effect by plus maze method, 30 minutes after injection.

The results showed that pistachio gum at doses of 11 and 5-25 g / kg had significant hypnotic effects (increased sleep at all doses and decreased sleep onset at 1 g / kg), anti-anxiety effect in maze test In addition, it had muscle relaxation (in the horizontal test at a dose of 1 g / kg) and decreased motor activity at all doses. The results of this study indicate that the hydroalcoholic extract of pistachio gum has a good effect on facilitating the process of drowsiness, anti-anxiety effect and muscle relaxation, which may be effective in reducing muscle contraction disorders, insomnia and anxiety.

Other studies show that eating a few pistachio kernels a day (which contains healthy compounds and a low-fat diet) leads to a significant reduction in the level of LDL or bad cholesterol. Lowering bad cholesterol levels means keeping the body’s arteries open and completing the heart’s blood supply.

“In our studies, pistachios have been shown to be a heart-healthy diet that reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease in humans,” said Dr. Penny Chris-Etherton. Pistachios are rich in the antioxidant lutein; Lutein is commonly found in green vegetables and light-colored fruits. Pistachio has a higher nutritional value among other nuts. “Pistachio lutein prevents cholesterol from clogging the arteries.” In one study, they even increased the amount of pistachios eaten by volunteers, and their experiments showed better results.
