Pistachio species and cultivars in Iran

Among the different species of Iranian pistachio, P.vera is the only species that has become domesticated and its wild type is present in the fern forests of the northeastern border regions of the country. Among the Iranian species, Chatlanqush and Baneh can be used as suitable bases for transplanting domestic pistachio trees.
The most important pistachio cultivars in Iran are: Akbari, Koleghoochi, Ahmad Aghaei, Ouhadi, Badami Zarand, Mumtaz, Khanjari Damghan, Shah Pasand, Nogh and Qazvini pistachios.

The most important species and Pistachio cultivars in Iran

Akbari Pistachio

Akbari pistachio is one of the most important commercial cultivars of pistachio in Iran and economically has the highest price among different cultivars. In this cultivar, the fruits are almond-shaped, large and elongated. The characteristics of Akbari pistachio trees can be mentioned as follows:

  • abundant product
  • High vegetative growth
  • Dense leaves
  • Wide leaf area
  • Late flowering
  • Product late (harvest in late September)

 

Ahmad Aghaei Pistachio

This cultivar also has large and almond-shaped fruits and also the skin of the fruit in this cultivar is white and bony, and these characteristics have attracted public attention to this cultivar and its expansion. Most of the leaves of this cultivar are composed of three leaflets. Ahmad Aghayayeh pistachio is medium in terms of flowering and is one of the late cultivars that can be harvested in the third decade of September.

 

Pistachio

This cultivar has hazelnut-shaped seeds. The leaves in this cultivar are composed of 5 leaflets so that the terminal leaflet is larger than the rest of the leaflets, this cultivar is sensitive to lack of water and nutrients and also because of early flowering, may be at risk of late spring frosts. Kaleghoochi pistachio is one of the average cultivars and its crop can be harvested in mid-September.

 

Pistachio Ouhadi

Ouhadi pistachio cultivar is very compatible with most pistachio growing regions of the country and therefore has a very good spread in different regions of the country. The petals are usually composed of three leaflets and the terminal leaflet is larger than the lateral leaflets. Pistachio is a medium flowering and early ripening so that its product can be harvested from the beginning of September.

 

Premium pistachios

Pistachio of Mumtaz cultivar has almond-shaped fruits and is more delicious compared to other commercial cultivars. The leaves in this cultivar are usually of the three-leaf compound type. Ohadi pistachio is an early flowering and late ripening cultivar so that its crop can be harvested in late September.

 

Pistachio Nogh

Pistachio cultivar Nogh, as its name suggests, is native to Nogh region of Rafsanjan city and is one of the old cultivars in this city. Nogh region is warmer than Rafsanjan itself and Nogh pistachio has expanded in this region due to adaptation to these conditions. Pistachio is almond-shaped and early flowering and can be harvested in late September and in this regard is one of the late varieties.

 

Damghan Pistachio Pistachio

Damghan pistachio cultivar Damghan has a similar appearance to almonds and its leaves are usually composed of 3 leaflets, the terminal leaflet is larger than the lateral leaflets. Damghan dagger pistachio is one of the commercial cultivars of late flowering and medium clay and can be harvested in mid-September.

 

Almond Pistachio

Almond cultivar pistachio, as its name suggests, has almond-shaped fruits, the fruits are small and dagger-shaped and have a dull color. The origin of almond pistachio is in Zarand region of Kerman. The leaves in this cultivar usually have 5 leaflets. Almond pistachio is an early flowering and early cultivar and can be harvested in the first half of August.

 

Shahpasand Pistachio

Pistachio Shahpasand cultivar is one of the commercial cultivars of pistachio in Damghan region which has almond-shaped fruits and most of its leaves are composed of 3 leaflets. This cultivar is late flowering and medium clay and can be harvested in mid-September.

 

Qazvini pistachio

The origin of Qazvini pistachio, as its name suggests, is Qazvin region and in this region it is also known as Kalebezi pistachio. The fruits in this cultivar are almond-shaped, small and have almost green kernels, and most of the leaves of this cultivar are composed of 3 leaflets. In this figure, the number of fruits in each cluster is very high. Pistachio of Qazvini cultivar is late flowering and early ripening so that its crop can be harvested in mid-August.
